Duties of a Floodplain Administrator and Preparing for a CAV

About this event

Instructors: Bailey Sawyer, CFM, Environmental Program Specialist, and Brienna Wirley, CFM, Environmental Program Specialist at the Department of Environmental Conservation

Description: This workshop provides an essential overview of the responsibilities of local Floodplain Administrators and how to prepare for a Community Assistance Visit (CAV) under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Floodplain Administrators play a critical role in ensuring compliance with floodplain development regulations, issuing permits, reviewing plans, and conducting substantial damage determinations. This training is designed for both new administrators and those looking to refresh their knowledge of the NFIP’s requirements and resources available to support their duties.

Additionally, the workshop will cover the Community Assistance Visit (CAV) process, a periodic evaluation conducted by FEMA or state floodplain management staff to ensure that local floodplain management programs are implemented correctly and to provide technical assistance. This workshop will cover the differences between CAVs and Community Assistance Contacts (CACs), what a community can expect during the CAV process, how to prepare for a CAV, and guidance resources available to help communities participating in the NFIP.
