About this event
Description: Clear, effective communication is critical when communicating about anything that poses a risk to our health and safety. It is critical that those working in hazard mitigation, flood preparedness, or disaster response are prepared to communicate effectively with each other and with the public. It is important to start building the specialized communication skills necessary in a crisis so that collectively we can provide the public with the knowledge needed for informed decision-making about risks; we can build or rebuild trust among stakeholders; and we can engage stakeholders in a dialogue to resolve disputes and reach consensus on community issues.
Not only is it critical to plan to reduce risk, but coordination, communication, and collaboration can mean the difference between an effective and an ineffective response to a crisis.
By the end of this lunch and learn, you should be able to:
• Describe the key principles of risk communication
• Identify potential challenges in risk communication and know how to avoid/manage them
• Consider the crisis communication planning process
